Nursing school 64% through

Today was the first day of maternity rotation. Our instructor oriented us to the floor and we were able to see a little baby born today at 23 weeks. Babies born at 23 weeks have a 20-35% survival rate. She was so tiny and fragile, below is her tiny little diaper.

So now that I am almost 2/3 of the way through with nursing school I thought I would share some interesting facts.

  1. The surface area of a human lung is equal to a tennis court.
  2. Your eyes are always the same size since birth but your nose and ears keep growing.
  3. Your brain stops growing after 18 years of age and from then on you loose more than 1,000 brain cells per day.
  4. Over 90% of diseases are caused or complicated by stress
  5. Babies are born with 300 while adults only have 206.
  6. Humans are the only animals to produce emotional tears
  7. Gastroschisis is a birth defect of the abdominal (belly) wall. The baby’s intestines stick outside of the baby’s body, through a hole beside the belly button.
  8. 80% of your body weight is in your blood.
  9. Heart cancer is very rare because heart cells stop dividing early in life
  10. More germs are transferred shaking hands than kissing.

Since nursing school has started I have become an obsessive hand washer and I realize my true passion and love is maternity. I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to go back to school and start something I love. Hopefully I can spend the next several years of my life cuddling and caring for these new tiny lives as well as their families.

Nursing school is all about tests, care plans and lots of readings. Clinical is most exciting and interacting with the patients make the days go by fast. Our uniforms are fun and consist of purple bottoms and white tops. (My roommate mistaken my purple pants for pajama bottoms but who can blame her, they do look like pajamas.) We are also not allowed to wear nail polish, our hair bust be off our necks and up, and we must wear all white shoes. In my right pocket I carry my notebook and pen and in the left I have my stethoscope and alcohol wipes (to clean it).

Thank you everyone who has supported me on my journey so far.
